The Mounger Zoo Weather Station (technical stuff)

TMZWS went into operation on January 23, 2012 and is based in the Denbigh area of Newport News, Virginia. The station is maintained by a retired United States Air Force command and control (C2) specialist experienced in weather satellite data acquisition and distribution. The station is powered exclusively by Davis weather instruments. The outdoor sensor array is an all-in-one Davis Vantage Vue suite and is mounted on a 20 foot galvanized steel pole (63 ft above sea level). The sensor suite is comprised of an anemometer, a rain gauge, a shielded thermal sensor and a hydrometer. Anemometer readings are slightly off due to excessive trees in the area surrounding the sensor which block high wind gusts. The pressure sensor is located indoors. The outside data is wirelessly transmitted every 1 to 3 seconds to a Davis weather console and permanently stored on a server using a data logger and Cumulus Ver 1.9.4 software. The data is then processed and delivered to this site every 10 seconds. Daily, monthly and all-time high and lows are updated every 5 minutes. The data is also distributed to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA ID EW9556 and the Weather Underground Station ID KVANEWP021 every 5 minutes. For record keeping purposes, the meteorological day ends at midnight and a daily NOAA report is generated. The station is not professionally calibrated, however, the data is frequently compared for accuracy with the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF), which is a short distance away. Adjustments are seldom needed. The station is thoroughly cleaned in the Spring and Fall.
